Every November 14th, we come together to observe World Diabetes Day—an important day to raise awareness and inspire meaningful change for the millions living with diabetes. This day reminds us of the ongoing challenges in diabetes care, research, and support, and calls on all of us to reflect on how we can work together to improve outcomes for people affected by the condition.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to manage their blood sugar levels. This form of diabetes typically develops in children and young adults, though it can occur at any age.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough. Often linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity, Type 2 diabetes can be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, insulin therapy.
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and affects how the body processes glucose. While it usually resolves after childbirth, women who experience gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Organizations like the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) are at the forefront of advocating for individuals living with diabetes. Their work helps raise awareness, fund research, and improve care for those affected by all forms of diabetes.

This World Diabetes Day, let’s reflect on how we can collectively overcome challenges—whether technological, geographic, or socioeconomic—and pave the way for a more equitable healthcare future. By building connections and working together, we can create a world where diabetes management is informed, accessible, and compassionate.
